Der römisch-katholische Sakralbau wurde 1936 von Papst Pius XI. in den Rang einer Basilica minor erhoben, ist zugleich eine Dekanatskirche (Dekanat Klosterneuburg) und eine Pfarrkirche (Stiftspfarre Klosterneuburg). Das Patrozinium der Stiftskirche ist Maria Geburt.
